Lifeguard Instructor Trainer
What Will You Learn?
The SSI Lifeguard Instructor Trainer Seminar provides individuals with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to teach, supervise, and issue certifications for all levels of SSI Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor programs.
What Will You Do?
- Complete and pass all requirements and evaluations as outlined in the instructor manual for the Lifeguard Instructor Trainer Seminar.
- Complete the Candidate Water Fitness Evaluation as outlined in the SSI Training Standards if it has been more than six months since the candidate has been evaluated.
- Display leadership behaviors and skill abilities.
- Complete a final exam with a passing score of at least 90%.
Course Schedule
Recommended hours for completion: 16–20. The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the individual instructor, based on the candidate’s needs, ability, and environmental conditions.

Course Prerequisites
Minimum age:
- 21 years old.
- Have assisted with at least one (1) Lifeguard Instructor Training Course.
- Submit a written application to an SSI Service Center for approval.
Have the following active status SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognized training agency:
- Level 2 Lifeguard Instructor
Have issued at least:
- 30 Water Safety Attendant certifications
- 15 Pool Lifeguard certifications
- 5 Inland Open Water Lifeguard certifications 5 Beach Lifeguard certifications
Equipment Requirements
During all in-water training sessions, each student must be equipped with a properly fitted Total Lifeguard System that includes:
- Rescue tube or equivalent
- Whistle
- Pocket mask
- Skin and sun exposure protection appropriate to the environment
During all in-water training, each SSI Professional must be equipped with at least all student equipment.
