What Will You Learn?
SSI Assistant Instructor Trainers prepare Assistant Instructors to teach academics and conduct in-water training. As an Assistant Instructor Trainer, you are also qualified to assist Instructor Trainers, giving you valuable experience along your scuba diving instructor pathway.
When ready, you can finish the Instructor Training Seminar, allowing you to become an SSI Instructor Trainer. Start your journey to create scuba diving instructors today.
The SSI Assistant Instructor Trainer Course consists of three main phases:
- Six Academic Sessions (Independent study or in a classroom)
- Four Pool / Confined Water Sessions
- Two Open Water Dives- Where its time to use the knowledge and skills you acquired, in the open ocean to complete the SSI Assistant Instructor Trainer Course.
What Will You Do?
- Complete all academics sessions as outlined in the instructor manual for the Assistant InstructorTrainer Seminar.
- Complete the program’s final exam.
- Complete the CandidateWater Fitness Evaluation as outlined in the SSI Training Standards.
- Complete and pass all requirements and evaluations listed in the instructor manual for the Assistant Instructor Trainer Seminar.
Course Schedule
Recommended hours for completion: 35-45. The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the individual instructor, based on student needs, student ability and water conditions.

Course Prerequisites
• Minimum age: 18 years old.
Have the following active status SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognised training agency:
• Divemaster Instructor
Have issued at least 45 certifications including:
• 30 Scuba Diver and/ or Open Water Diver
• 3 Diver Stress & Rescue
• 3 Dive Guide
• 3 Science of Diving
• 6 Advanced Adventurer and/or additional specialty program
The candidate may also apply completed Try Scuba and Basic Diver programs toward the minimum requirements for Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver certifications.
For Scuba Diver certifications:
• Six (6) Try Scuba recognitions are equivalent to one (1) Scuba Diver certification
• Three (3) Basic Diver certifications are equivalent to one (1) Scuba Diver certification
For OpenWater Diver certifications:
• Twelve (12) Try Scuba recognitions are equivalent to one (1) Open Water Diver certification
• Six (6) Basic Diver certifications are equivalent to one (1) Open Water Diver certification
Equipment Requirements
*Equipment will be provided by your Dive Centre. We recommend that you should get your own gear once you become a certified diver.
